Braces are a common orthodontic procedure that helps straighten crooked or misaligned teeth. They help align teeth by constantly applying pressure to the teeth which will eventually shift them into place.

Preparing for Braces

When considering braces it is best to see your general dentist prior to booking an appointment with an orthodontist. Once the dentist sees you they can refer you to an orthodontist that will help you through your journey to straighter teeth. The orthodontist will ask you various health questions and most likely order a series of X-rays of your head and mouth. They may also take impressions in order to create a model of your teeth. Once all of the required information is collected he will create a treatment plan suited for you.

The Procedure

The first step is to clean and dry your teeth in order to apply the adhesive resin to your teeth. The adhesive is used to attach the brackets to your teeth. Once they are placed he will install an arch wire into the brackets and use elastics to secure the wires in place. The process could take up to 2 hours and is not itself painful; however discomfort may follow after the braces are put in place. Your teeth may be sore for a while after the braces have been placed and will take some getting used to.

Caring for Your Braces

It is important to take special care of your teeth when the braces are placed. Plaque build up and cavities could occur if your teeth are not taken care of. In order to take care of your teeth consider using a proxabrush in order to reach those hard to reach areas. It is important to brush and floss your teeth during the remainder of your orthodontic treatment.

When flossing always use dental floss coated with wax in order to prevent it from being stuck between your braces. Floss threaders are essential to properly flossing your teeth and are used to floss right underneath your wire. Make sure to floss between each and every tooth for best results and to avoid acquiring plague build up.

Paying attention to the foods you eat can help maximize the effectiveness of your brushing and flossing. Eating foods that are high in sugar may lead to plaque buildup and could cause damage to your teeth. Avoiding foods that could get stuck in between your braces are also a good idea; such foods could include popcorn, nuts and candies. Make sure to visit your dental professional on a subsequent basis for check-ups and regular appointments with your orthodontist for adjustments to your braces.
